What to do with Broken Dentures
Dentures don’t last forever, and everyday wear and tear can place them under stress, causing them to crack, chip, or even break.
When you find your dentures are damaged, it’s important to seek professional advice right away to prevent more damage from occurring. Rough spots on the parts that come into contact with your mouth can be uncomfortable and painful. The denture could also start to come apart, possibly at the most inconvenient time or place.
What Can Be Repaired?
The most common damage to dentures is loss or fracture of a tooth, cracks, chips and scrapes on the denture itself, and complete breaks where the denture is in two or more pieces.
Whether or not the denture can be repaired will depend on the severity of the damage. Minor cracks can be professionally repaired as long as you don’t delay treatment. Your dental prosthetist can often do repairs while you wait so you’re not inconvenienced.
If your dentures are broken into pieces, be sure to collect all the pieces together and go straight to your dental prosthetist.
There are denture repair kits available, but we don’t advise using them. It might seem like an easy fix, but your dentures do a big job of daily chewing and biting, so they should be repaired by a trained professional for peace of mind and comfort.
When to Replace Your Broken Dentures
Sometimes there’s just no repairing your broken dentures. Most dentures will last 8 to 10 years, depending on how well you maintain them. However, if your denture is broken into pieces, it has lost its integrity and will be unstable and uncomfortable in your mouth.
It’s best to see your dental prosthetist and get fitted for new custom dentures. If you’ve had your dentures for a while, you could be missing out on new dental technology that can see you wearing the most comfortable and natural looking dentures you’ve ever had.
As always, speak to your dental professional for the best advice on new dentures and denture repairs.
